Thomas Sully (1783-1872) was born in Lincolnshire but emigrated with his family to America in 1792. He returned briefly to England to study with Sir Thomas Lawrence and to paint the newly crowned Queen Victoria in 1837. The following year he settled in Philadelphia where he achieved great fame.
