Gwen John (1876-1939) was born in Haverfordwest, in Wales, the second of four children of solicitor Edwin John. Gwen John’s younger brother was the artist Augustus John. She trained at the Slade School of Art in London from 1894-7. In 1898 she visited Paris where she studied under James McNeill Whistler. She continued to live in Paris and began modeling for the sculptor Auguste Rodin, and became his lover. Gwen John painted mainly portraits and single figure studies of women and children. She first exhibited her work at the New English Art Club (NEAC) in 1900. She also exhibited in Paris at the Société des Artistes Français in 1920 and the Salon d’Automne in 1921. She had her first solo exhibition at the New Chenil Galleries in 1926.
