Born in Paris, Claude Monet (1840-1926) was one of the outstanding French Impressionists of the 19th century. Together with Manet, Degas, Renoir, Pissarro, Sisley and others, he pursued the study of light. Monet was particularly interested in the changing colours of the subject he was painting as the daylight varied from, hour to hour. An early visit to England had familiarized him with the work of Constable and Turner, whose treatment of light he deeply admired.
