Edouard Manet (1832-1883) was a French painter born in Paris. His early style of painting was founded on Goya and Velasquez and he painted many Spanish subjects. His unconventional technique and subject matter shocked his contemporaries and his rejection from academic circles led him to associate with the Impressionist group, although he refused to exhibit with them. Towards the end of his life, he did gain official recognition and was awarded the Legion of Honour.
