Artist Biography
Henry Herbert La Thangue (1859-1929) attended the Royal College of Art, the Lambeth School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools, and was awarded the RA Gold Medal in 1879, the highest accolade for a young painter at that time. Soon afterwards, he settled in Paris to study under J. L. Gerome at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. While in Paris, like many English artists, La Thangue was much influenced by the Barbizon School and the leading proponents of pleinairisme, Bastien-Lepage and Dagnan-Bouveret. In 1884 he returned to England and settled in Norfolk. Principally a painter of rural genre scenes, La Thangue was in sympathy with the aims and ideals of the Newlyn School in Cornwall, a group of painters also moved by the artistic climate in France. He was a founder member of the New English Arts Club, and was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1898, and made a full Academician in 1912.
