Frank Southgate (1872-1916) specialised in painting watercolours of birds, and was well known for his ability to capture their movement in flight. This was achieved by spending large amounts of time bird watching in his native county, Norfolk. His considerable knowledge of the Norfolk Broads and its wildlife led to various commissions to illustrate books on the subject. The ‘Two Springer Spaniels’ was probably painted on the Broads, demonstrating Southgate’s skill in the use of oil paint, a medium which he rarely used. The artist was tragically killed in action during the Great War.
