Bartholomäus Bruyn (1493-1555), usually called Barthel Bruyn or Barthel Bruyn the Elder was a German Renaissance painter. He painted altarpieces and portraits, and was Cologne’s foremost portrait painter in the sixteenth century. During the early part of his career in Cologne, Bruyn painted a series of small panels; seven in this series, including the The Nativity and The Adoration of the Kings, illustrate the life of Christ and another series from about the same period depict the lives of the saints. All include a shield but in only a few has the coat-of-arms been completed. That in the Nativity belongs to the Counts of Manderschied-Blakenheim, an important family from the Eifel area, and although it is not possible to say for certain who the donor was it may have been Countess Elisabeth von Manderschied, Abbess of the Nunnery of Saint Cecilia in Cologne.
