William Teulon Blandford Fletcher (1858-1936) was born in Hampstead, London, his father was opposed to his becoming an artist and it was with a shortage of funds that he attended the Royal College of Art in South Kensington from 1875 to 1879. He left as a medallist and Queen's prizeman and continued his studies at the Academic Royale in Antwerp. In vacations and on completing his course he went to Brittany where students, finding inspiration in the traditional way of life, flocked to paint plein-air- directly from life rather than in the studio. While in Brittany Fletcher met a group of young English artists (among them Stanhope Forbes), who were to establish themselves at Newlyn in Cornwall and produce some very significant work. In 1884 Fletcher stayed at Newlyn for a few months but he preferred to travel the country in search of his subjects.
